Meditation on the Sixth Law

Begin this meditation with the same posture and breathing you used to lead into the earlier meditations. When you have done so, turn your attention to the theme of this meditation.

As with the earlier meditations presented in this book, choose a material thing that is part of your life to be the subject of your meditation. In this practice, your goal is to understand the different planes of being present in that object. Begin by considering the material substances that are part of the item, and think about the roles those substances play in it. Next, consider the role of energy in the item and, after that, life—for most of the things around us are made at least partly from the bodies of living things, or they have been shaped by the actions of living things. From life move to the plane of the emotions, considering what feelings have shaped and been shaped by the item, and then go from the plane of the emotions to that of the mind, considering what thoughts have affected the item and been affected by it. Can you go further, to planes above thought?

Work through this process with several different material things, devoting a separate session of meditation to each one. Next, explore some of the less material realities in your life in the same way. Finally, apply the same meditation to yourself; seek an understanding of the roles that different forms of matter, energy, and information play in yourself, and then go on to explore other planes of yourself, including those of emotions and thoughts. Make this exploration as detailed and complete as you can.
